Biographical / Administrative history

Biographical history

Bertram (Bert) Charles Bell was born at Coochin Coochin Station, near Boonah on 5 April 1893, the son of James Thomas Marsh Bell and his wife Gertrude Augusta Bell, nee Norton. Bell was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School. In 1914 he visited the United Kingdom with his sister Una Bell. When World War I broke out he enlisted to take the first 'Queensland' motor ambulance to Boulogne, France and served as an ambulance driver for six months. While in France, Bell was inspired to become a pilot with the Royal Naval Air Service (R.N.A.S.) and returned to England in February 1915 to take private flying lessons. He obtained his pilot's license (aviator's certificate) on 28 June 1915 but had already been commissioned as a probationary flight sub-lieutenant on 2 May 1915.

First serving with No. 1 squadron for 18 months he was promoted to flight lieutenant in April 1916 and was subsequently transferred to No. 3 Squadron. In March 1917 he was promoted to Flight Commander and from April 1917 until a few months after the war was commanding officer of No. 10 Squadron, redesignated No. 210 Squadron on the formation of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) in April 1918. Bell was at that time also promoted to the rank of major. While on active service Bell received the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) and a Distinguished Service Order (DSO). In March 1919, after refusing the offer of a permanent commission in the R.A.F. Bell returned home to manage Coochin Coochin Station.

He married Adeline Grace Barnes on 24 April 1926. As Coochin Coochin Station was subdivided into agricultural farms, Bell and his wife settled at Aroo (part of the original station) and made their farm into one of the most modern in Australia. At the onset of World War II Bell tried to enlist but was advised by Governor Leslie Wilson that it would be "most undesirable for [him] to give up his work".. and that "now [he is] doing what is essential service to the country". Deeply disturbed by world events, Bell suffered a breakdown in June 1941 and died on 15 June of that year. Bert Bell's brother Victor Bell also served as a major in the Royal Air Force during World War I. He commanded No. 80 Squadron in 1918 - 1919. Another brother, Ernest Bell, was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The three sisters Una, Aileen and Enid Bell lived together at Coochin Coochin Station and remained unmarried.
