Biographical / Administrative history
Biographical history
Leonard Shillam was born in 1915 in Brisbane and attended Brisbane Grammar School until 1931. He then enrolled at the Central Technical College in Brisbane. Kathleen O'Neill was born in Devonshire, England 1916. Her father was a freelance artist who worked from home and travelled frequently. In 1920 he visited Australia and encouraged his family to emigrate. In 1927 Kath and her older sister arrived in Brisbane and settled in Sandgate. In 1929 Kath won a scholarship to attend Brisbane Girls Grammar School. In 1932 she enrolled in Art School where she met Len Shillam. Kath left the college in 1934 to work as a commercial artist. Len and Kath continued to work together in shared studio space in Brisbane. In 1938 Len accepted a scholarship to study art in London. During this period, they wrote regular letters keeping each other up to date. When Len returned to Brisbane in 1940 the couple were reunited. Len and Kath were married in 1942.By the 1950's the Shillams were full-time sculptors, exhibiting jointly and with other artists. Both Len and Kath were awarded many important commissions including; "Enlightenment", Queensland State Public Library (1959), "Proclamation Figure", St Johns Cathedral Brisbane (1959), "Threshold", Canberra Technical College (1967), "Coat of Arms", Parliament House, Brisbane (1979), and "Pelicans", Queensland Cultural Centre (1985). The Shillams had multiple exhibitions at the Johnstone Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery,
Content and structure
Scope and content
The collection includes a large number of black and white and colour photographs, including images of sculptures, watercolours and drawings by Len and Kath Shillam and images of the artists in their studio. Also exhibition catalogues and ephemera relating to several two person and group exhibitions, correspondence, meeting minutes, newsletters of various associations, and newspaper clippings. Also included are a small number of sculptures and scale models of sculptures made from various materials.
